Looking forward to getting the Scopes and Rapid Loader upgrades for our cannons, the Underwater Turbine and Sensitized Rudder upgrades for our ships, the Homing Rockets, and the Human Catapult, which shoots a crewmember onto an enemy ship, who then tries to capture the vessel-if he's successful, he automatically steers it to the nearest stronghold. You need to find blueprints as you explore to unlock the upgrades, as there's no trainer cheat for that, but you’re given a special item as part of an early quest reward that helps you locate undiscovered shipwrecks, where you pick these up, so that's good.

We also have the Spiked Cannonballs upgrade and the Slowdown Harpoon, which fires a harpoon that has a weight attached to it with a rope to slow down enemy ships. The one time so far that I used it, point blank, it sank the enemy ship in one shot. At this posting, we're up to having the biggest, best Pirate faction ship, called Hedgehog, because it's bristling with 74 cannons, one of which is the bow-mounted, forward-shooting Mortar upgrade. The way I like to work it when we’re boating around is we mind our own business unless we’re attacked-when we are, we will return fire and sink whatever it is.

The object of the game is basically to unite 3 good pirate factions against a bad pirate faction and the colonial forces, but you can also raid colonies and sail around for random attacks, both for booty.

On top of that (and, again, shamefully), the game download didn't include a PDF of a manual, which, with no walkthrough, guide, or FAQ out there, would've been nice, but I checked ReplacementDocs and found one, so that helps a bit getting used to its idiosyncratic conventions, and learning about the other factions, units, ships, upgrades, and special weapons in the game. Also adjusted the audio, checking the jaunty music way down and the annoying character movement acknowledgements (phrases like “Right away”) all the way down to nothing. I also changed the resolution from "something too high" to my 1024x768, to make the text more readable. When I next went to the game, the default controls were unchanged, but, leaving it, I found a dupe of the original "keyboard" file elsewhere and, after clearing it, then pasting a copy of the other into it, my improved controls worked. Shamefully, there's no way to do it in-game, but I found a "keyboard" game file, editable with Notepad, and spent hours tweaking it to my liking. Then, I wanted to change the "on ship" and "on land" key bindings for the controls from their stupid defaults. Since I’m using Firefox browser and Eudora e-mail, uninstalling my IE 11 resolved this. The first issue was that the trainer kept crashing during launch, but I eventually found out that this was caused by updated versions of Internet Explorer.

I saw the poor reviews, but still went ahead and bought the download for 10 bucks. I came across it the other day when I was doing a concerted search for a new-to-me pirate or Age of Sail-type game that looked good, wasn’t an MMO or all about trade, and had some cheats available.

This came out a few years ago and reviews have been disparaging, but, with Patch 4 installed and playing it with a trainer (so you don't have to worry about your character's health, or your ship's condition, or money), it seems fine to me, except for things you can put up with, like the awful voice work or momentary pauses when boating around. I’m pleased to be playing another game that I can recommend.
